Beaches, sea forts, temples and forests — all within an easy drive of the cottage.

Alibag Beach
01

Alibag Beach

The Alibag beach is just one kilometre from the state transport bus station and the PNP and Ajanta ferry offices, and stretches 3 to 4 km to the west. The moment you reach the beach you see the famous Kulaba Fort. The beachfront has all sorts of eatables — bhel puri, patties, ice cream, tender coconut — and you can walk on the smooth sand or take a horse-cart ride, a fun-filled outing for kids and the elderly alike.

Kulaba Fort
02

Kulaba Fort

Located 1 km across from Alibag beach, this sea fort was begun by the great Maratha warrior Shivaji in 1680 A.D. It is 900 ft long, 350 ft wide, with 25 ft high walls and 17 bastions, and has stood for over 300 years. It can only be reached at low tide along a narrow strip of land. Inside you’ll find a well and a tank of sweet water in the midst of the sea, and two intact cannons on one of the bastions.

Nagaon Beach
03

Nagaon Beach

An adjacent beach at Nagaon, 7 km from Alibag on the same road, lined with neatly planted casuarina trees. The play of light and shadow in their cool shade is a special experience. It is the straightest and broadest clean beach in Alibag taluka, with good lodging and food options from locals.

Akshi Beach
04

Akshi Beach

Akshi is an evergreen fishing village just 5 km from Alibag, and generally not crowded. Reach it by the Alibag–Revdanda bus, an eight-seater auto rickshaw or private vehicle in about 15 minutes. Houses in the village are built in the deep shade of coconut and betel-nut trees.

Kashid Beach
05

Kashid Beach

The famous Kashid beach, 18 km from Murud, is known for its dazzling silvery-white sand. It is a favourite spot for advertising, TV and film shoots and has small food stalls. Driving from Alibag to Murud, the last U-turn of the ghat road that descends onto Kashid beach is simply mesmerising.

Murud Beach
06

Murud Beach

Murud beach is surrounded on three sides by mountains. The water is clear blue, the sand silvery white, and the sunset from here is fabulous.

Varsoli Beach
07

Varsoli Beach

On the outskirts of Alibag, Varsoli is relatively less visited — a quiet beach with sparkling white sand and cleaner seawater, in a small village thick with coconut and casuarina.

Sasawane Beach
08

Sasawane Beach

14 km off Alibag on the Alibag–Rewas road, turn left at Awas to reach Sasawane. Mumbai’s shore lies just opposite — the illuminated skyline at night is a sight to watch. Don’t miss the bungalow of the late sculptor Mr. Karmarkar, where his exquisite originals are on display.

Revdanda Aagarkot
09

Revdanda Aagarkot

17 km south of Alibag are the remnants of the huge outer walls of this fort built by the Portuguese in 1558. The thick walls are hollow, with interconnected secret passages, and run 5–6 km in length. The ‘Saat Khani Buruj’ bastion dates from 1534.

Janjira Fort
10

Janjira Fort

This formidable symbol of Siddi naval power over the Arabian Sea is reached by sailboat from Rajpuri jetty, 5 km from Murud. Two great bastions guard the main gate, where a stone sculpture shows a lion overpowering six elephants.

Phansad Sanctuary
11

Phansad Sanctuary

Once a reserved hunting forest of the Nawab of Murud, Phansad is now a government wildlife sanctuary. There is an information centre, an exhibition and trekking facilities near Supegaon, on the Murud–Roha road.

Sagargad
12

Sagargad

A hill fort from Shivaji’s time, 7 km from Alibag at 1,357 ft above sea level. Halfway up are the Siddheshwar temple and an ashram, with a cascading waterfall in the monsoon. The trek from there to the fort takes about an hour.

Kankeshwar Temple
13

Kankeshwar Temple

13 km northeast of Alibag, this famous Shiva temple sits on a 900 ft hill, reached by a well-paved climb of about an hour. The fatigue vanishes the moment you enter the scenic temple premises, which include shrines to Sri Paleshwar, Sri Hanuman, Sri Balram Krishna and Lord Shiva.

Tomb of Kanhoji Angre
14

Tomb of Kanhoji Angre

A five-minute walk from Alibag ST stand, on the way to the market. The eight-faced structure with exquisitely sculpted pillars stands in memory of the great Maratha admiral Kanhoji Angre.
